Learning Objectives Upon completion of this program participants should be able to:
Outline protocols for safe prescribing of opioids and other controlled substance for effective pain management;
Identify high-risk behavior in patients and apply standards of care;
Demonstrate effective communication with patients regarding the prescription of an opioid or other controlled substance;
Comply with regulatory requirements for prescribing and monitoring controlled substances;
Discuss best practices for alternative treatment options, and multi-modal approaches to pain management
ACGME/ABMS Competencies This program addresses the following desirable physician attributes: patient care and procedural skills; interpersonal and communication skills; medical knowledge; provide patient-centered care; values/ethics for interprofessional practice; and roles/responsibilities.
*Meeting Mandated CME Requirements This program is eligible to count towards: (i) the eight hours of training on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders required for all U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration-registered practitioners, and (ii) the two hours of CME in the study of pain management and the prescribing and monitoring of controlled substances required by the Texas Medical Board.
This program will address the TMB specified topics of:
Best practices, alternative treatment options, and multimodal approaches to pain management that may include physical therapy, psychotherapy, and other treatments;
Safe and effective pain management related to the prescription of opioids and other controlled substances, including education regarding:
Standards of care;
Identification of drug-seeking behavior in patients; and
Effectively communicating with patients about the prescription of an opioid or other controlled substances, and
prescribing and monitoring of controlled substances.

2.25 DEA SUD The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 enacted a new one-time, eight-hour training requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This program is eligible to count towards the training requirement.
