SBIRT is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce, and prevent problematic use, abuse, and dependence on alcohol and illicit drugs. It is an integrated approach that offers early intervention for those with substance use disorders and at risk of developing these disorders. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: - Explain the rationale for universal screening when prescribing controlled medications;
- Identify the potential health impacts of substance or medication misuse and substance or medication use disorders;
- Identify substance use red flags;
- Identify how screening is conducted, including prescreening and screening instruments; and
- Identify tools that can be used to navigate the SBIRT process when faced with unfamiliar substance use scenarios.
ACGME/ABMS Competencies This program addresses the following desirable physician attributes: provide patient-centered care, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, systems-based practice, and roles/responsibilities. *Meeting Mandated CME Requirements This program is eligible to count towards: (i) the eight hours of training on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders required for all U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration-registered practitioners, and (ii) the two hours of CME in the study of pain management and the prescribing and monitoring of controlled substances required by the Texas Medical Board. This program will address the TMB specified topics of: - Best practices, alternative treatment options, and multimodal approaches to pain management that may include physical therapy, psychotherapy, and other treatments;
- Safe and effective pain management related to the prescription of opioids and other controlled substances, including education regarding:
- Standards of care;
- Identification of drug-seeking behavior in patients; and
- Effectively communicating with patients about the prescription of an opioid or other controlled substances, and
- prescribing and monitoring of controlled substances.
Participation in this program in no way implies the participant has fully met the federally and state-mandated training requirements. Participants are solely responsible for ensuring any mandated training requirements are completed.
