Federal and state regulations emphasize physicians’ responsibility in monitoring and managing patients when prescribing controlled medications for pain.

ACGME/ABMS Competencies This program addresses the following desirable physician attributes: provide patient-center care, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, systems-based practice, and roles/responsibilities.
*Meeting Mandated CME Requirements This program is eligible to count towards: (i) the eight hours of training on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders required for all U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration-registered practitioners, and (ii) the two hours of CME in the study of pain management and the prescribing and monitoring of controlled substances required by the Texas Medical Board. This program will address the TMB specified topics of: - Safe and effective pain management related to the prescription of opioids and other controlled substances, including education regarding:
- Standards of care;
- Identification of drug-seeking behavior in patients; and
Participation in this program in no way implies the participant has fully met the federally and state-mandated training requirements. Participants are solely responsible for ensuring any mandated training requirements are completed.

Andre S. Chen, MD
Dr. Andre Chen is a Board Certified Addiction Medicine specialist in Austin, TX in practice at Advanced Pain Care. Originally from Maryland, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin, Doctor of Medicine at the University of Maryland, and Masters of Business Administration at the University of Texas at Austin. His completed his residency training at the Central Texas Medical Foundation (Brackenridge Hospital) in Austin. Prior to becoming an Addiction Medicine specialist, he practiced Family Medicine at the Austin Diagnostic Clinic for over 20 years and was listed in Austin Monthly magazine as a Top Doctor in 2015 and 2017. He is board certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) and American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). As an avid software developer, he has developed several clinical apps in the iPhone/iPad App Store. Dr. Chen focuses on substance use disorders as medically treatable conditions in the same way that diabetes or hypertension are. His primary goal at Advanced Pain Care is to ensure that patients with chronic pain conditions can safely and effectively receive the best treatment possible.
