Reducing health disparities in these communities includes comprehensive support for the rural physician and its community members.
Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: - Describe the challenges of working in rural communities and list recommendations to prepare trainees for practicing in health deserts;
- Assess the effects of distress, fatigue, and the mental/emotional/physical quality of life for the physician and their patients due to the inadequate number of physicians and workforce in a rural setting;
- Discuss the projected physician shortage and the overall impact;
- Evaluate mentorship programs that help medical students explore career paths in rural settings; and
- List the existing rural immersion programs that serve as gateways to practice in health deserts and the opportunities for growth in those areas.
