Description

Physicians have easy ways to commit suicide and the knowledge to carry it out successfully. Every year 300 to 400 physicians take their own lives, resulting in loss to patients, families, and the medical community. This course explains risk factors and warning signs in potentially suicidal physicians. With this knowledge, you could save a colleague’s life, or maybe even your own.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
1. Cite the number of physicians, residents and medical students lost to suicide annually;
2. Describe the characteristics of major depressive disorder;
3. Identify risk factors for suicide and formulate suicidal behavior in terms of interactions between long- and short-term behavioral mechanisms;
4. Apply current knowledge about mechanisms underlying suicidal behavior to practical clinical situations ;
5. Identify people at risk and explain the warning signs of a physician, resident, and/or medical student who is suicidal;
6. Develop preventive strategies balancing pharmacological, social, and health-related interventions; and
7. Recognize the ethical consequences of suicide.

Anita Jimenez-Belinoski, MD, of Montgomery served as medical director at 1960 Pediatrics, a branch of Texas Children’s Pediatric Associates in Houston. The retired pediatrician is board certified by the American Board of Pediatric Medicine. Dr. Jimenez-Belinoski is a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, where she also completed her internship and residency.
