Learning Objectives

  1. Review what is addiction; 
  2. Identify warning signs of addiction; and 
  3. Discuss ways to treat addiction to appropriately manage chronic pain patients with addiction.

*Meeting Mandated CME Requirements
 This program is eligible to count towards: (i) the eight hours of training on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders required for all U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration-registered practitioners, and (ii) the two hours of CME in the study of pain management and the prescribing and monitoring of controlled substances required by the Texas Medical Board. 
  
 This program will address the TMB specified topics of: 
  • Best practices, alternative treatment options, and multimodal approaches to pain management that may include physical therapy, psychotherapy, and other treatments;  
  • Safe and effective pain management related to the prescription of opioids and other controlled substances, including education regarding:  
    • Standards of care; 
    • Identification of drug-seeking behavior in patients; and 
    • Effectively communicating with patients about the prescription of an opioid or other controlled substances. 
Participation in this program in no way implies the participant has fully met the federally and state-mandated training requirements. Participants are solely responsible for ensuring any mandated training requirements are completed.

    Michael P. Sprintz, DO Bio

    Dr. Michael Sprintz is a national expert on addiction and chronic pain. He trained at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center and is triple board-certified in Addiction Medicine, Pain Medicine, and Anesthesiology.  

    Dr. Sprintz is personally in recovery from opioid and alcohol addiction for over 20 years. After getting sober, he found his calling in helping patients with pain and addiction and established  himself as one of the pioneers in his field. In 2013, he founded the Sprintz Center for Pain and Recovery in The Woodlands, TX. The innovative practice was one of the first private pain and addiction treatment programs in the country. Dr. Sprintz has also married patient care with technology by founding Cellarian. This software was created to empower clinical decision-making support by providing visualizations, medical documentation, and data analysis in real time. His story of overcoming addiction, his professional expertise, his charisma, humor and authenticity make him a valuable personality to engage, entertain, inform and inspire a global audience.
