While occupational stress is part of a physician’s (or resident’s or medical student’s) job, it should not infiltrate the workplace/learning culture. A supportive, healthy workplace is vital for decreasing stress. Organizations can create an environment that actively engages individuals to help them manage stress.
Learning Objectives Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Recognize factors that contribute to stress and burnout in the medical profession;
- Describe the shared responsibility of physicians and institutions to reduce burnout and promote physician engagement;
- Assess personal risk for burnout;
- Explain that unresolved stress can lead to unethical behavior and poor patient outcomes; and
- Identify and apply healthy coping skills that improve ethical behavior, enrich personal resilience, manage stress, and prevent burnout.
Target Audience This program is developed for physicians, residents, and students of medical professionals in all specialties.
