Because cancer is one of the costliest medical conditions to treat in the U.S., many cancer patients are likely to experience financial difficulty. This hardship is called financial toxicity because, akin to physical toxicity, distress over out-of-pocket expenses related to treatment can diminish a patient’s quality of life. Financial hardship also may impede delivery of the highest-quality care. As a physicians, there are ways you can help.
