With more active time, more 24-hour interruptions, and fewer hours of sleep have come a host of problems for physicians, students, and residents. Physicians often works in a state of fatigue at odds with their circadian clock. With advances in our understanding of the harmful effects of fatigue on health and performance, we can create strategies that will help individuals manage themselves and others.
Learning Objectives Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
Identify lifestyle and practice factors that contribute to fatigue;
Recognize how fatigue affects performance and patient safety;
Identify miscommunication challenges due to false perceptions of fatigue and exhaustion;
Modify physician behavior and health care environments to improve patient outcomes;
Describe signs of fatigue in medical students, trainees, physicians, and other health care professionals;
Analyze ethical considerations of fatigue in physicians; and
Integrate tools such as a fatigue management plan and periodic evaluations of sleep quality and cycles to modify physician behavior and health care environments, and improve patient outcomes.
