    Are you a physician thinking about accepting an employment relationship? Whether you are just starting your practice or making a career-changing move, discover in detail how to evaluate contractual arrangements so you can achieve and protect your best interest.

    This guide analyzes the risks, benefits, and other considerations of an employment decision. It broadly encompasses traditional employment relationships and newly invented relationships with institutional employers.

    Part I discusses all aspects of a physician's contractual employment. In particular, it scrutinizes the risks and benefits of employment by hospital-sponsored entities including compensation models, restrictive covenants, handling of medical records, and health and liability insurance.

    Part II discusses the sale of a medical practice to an institutional employer, including such aspects as valuation, deliverables, and liability.

    Course Objectives
    Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

    1. Discuss the pros and cons of of physician employment;

    2. Outline steps to evaluate, sell, or merge a medical practice;

    3. Recognize the impact of contracts on physician income, work schedule, medical decisionmaking, and

        liability risks; and

    4. Develop a plan when and if employment is no longer a viable option.

    Teaching Methods
    The participant is required to read the course in its entirety and complete an online test and course evaluation to obtain credit.

    9 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (Enduring)   The Texas Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

    The Texas Medical Association designates this enduring activity for a maximum of 9 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    The Texas Medical Association requires physician to complete 70-percent of the test questions correctly to receive credit for this course.
