    Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of disease and death in our society, yet statistics indicate that just one-third of eligibile office visits address it. This course discusses different tobacco delivery systems, cessation counseling techniques for physicians, and meaningful use applications for reimbursement.

    Course Objectives:
    Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

    • Discuss health impact of nicotine dependence and cessation resources with all patients who use tobacco products.
    • Identify benefits of using a research-based standardized protocol to help refer patients to tobacco cessation assistance within the Electronic Health Record
    • of the healthcare system.
    • Describe meaningful use guidelines for documenting tobacco use for patients and providing appropriate counseling or referral services.

    Deborah Fuller

    Dr. Deborah Fuller specializes in obstetrics & gynecology in Dallas, Texas.  She graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1984.  Dr. Fuller currently serves as the chair for the Council on Health Promotion for the Texas Medical Association.  In addition to her private practice, she also works as an associate professor at Texas A&M and at Baylor College of Medicine.
