    This activity will educate participants on how to adequately prepare for age-related changes to ensure personal well-being and continuity of optimal patient care. The activity also describes how physicians can emotionally and ethically prepare for a successful and satisfying retirement, which represents 25 percent of one's life.

    Target Audience
    This program is designed for physicians of all specialties.

    Course Objectives 
    Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

    • Identify common neurological, psychiatric, and other medical illnesses that may impair the aging physician

    • Describe how impairment may affect the medical practice

    • Recognize the ethical responsibility of physicians to  address impairment in colleagues and themselves to ensure safe patient care

    • Employ steps that address impairment in the aging physician

    • Assess the importance of early planning for the practicing physician in preparing for a successful and satisfying retirement

    • Discuss patient care, physician factors, and ethical considerations shown to be significant in preparing for retirement

    • Apply skills taught in this course to maintaining optimal patient care while planning for a successful retirement

    Teaching Methods
    The participant is required to read the course in its entirety and complete an online test and course evaluation.
