    Physicians are often reluctant to discuss dying and end-of-life care with their patients because it stirs up strong emotions for the patients, their family, and the physicians themselves. However, such conversations are essential in providing the best care for terminally ill patients. This course will help physicians open a dialogue to determine a patient’s wishes regarding his or her end-of-life care.

    At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

    • Discuss challenges confronting physicians caring for dying patients, and

    J. Russell Hoverman, MD, PhD, specializes in medical oncology and is board certified in internal medicine and hematology. Dr. Hoverman is vice president of quality programs for Texas Oncology, P.A. and is the medical director of managed care for The US Oncology Network. He also serves on the board of directors and executive council for the Austin Metro Unit of the American Cancer Society.
